Waking Up Beside Her

WE WERE AT A PARTY
AND SHE VANISHED
SOMEWHERE
I LOOKED ALL OVER THE PLACE
FOR HER
BUT SHE WAS GONE
I WAS FRANTIC
but then i woke up
and she lay there
beside me
i was relieved

WHEN I MARRIED HER
WE SPENT ALL NIGHT TOGETHER
IT WAS A BIG WEDDING
EVERYONE WAS INVITED
WE STAYED UP ALL NIGHT
BEFOREHAND
WE WERE INSEPERABLE
HER VELVET DRESS WAS PRETTY
HER LOCKS OF BLOND HAIR
HUNG BELOW HER EARS
THIS WAS THE WOMEN
I WOULD SPEND MY LIFE WITH
WE WEREN’T SUPPOSED
TO SEE EACH OTHER
BEFOREHAND
FOR SUPERSTITIONS FORBID IT
BUT WE COULD NOT SEPARATE
WE STAYED UP ALL NIGHT
AND TALKED
SAT BENEATH THE ROUND MIRROR
IN THE CHURCH’S ATTIC
AND WATCHED AS THE SUN ASCENDED
IN THE DISTANCE
THIS WOULD BE THE DAY WE JOINED
HANDS
AND WALKED ACROSS LIFE
FOREVER RESISTING
THE TUG OF TEMPTATION
THE FOLLOWING DAY
WE STOOD AT THE ALTER
AND SAID OUR VOWS
THE PREACHER MAN
ANNOUNCED OUR UNION AND WE
KISSED BEFORE THE CROWD
WE WALKED TOGETHER BETWEEN THE PEWS
PEOPLE WATCHED US IN AWE
I WAS SO HAPPY
BUT SLIGHTLY BAFFLED THAT
WHEN I LEFT WITH HER
SHE KISSED ME GOODBYE
AND SAID
“Congratulations”
“For what?”
“Getting married”
“Um, what do you mean,
getting married?”
“You know”
SHE RAN HER HAND ALONG MINE
AND RELEASED ME COLD
THEN WANDERED OFF
THAT WAS WHEN I NOTICED
IN THE DISTANCE
MY WIFE
THE ONE I HAD ACTUALLY MARRIED
THIS WOMAN I HAD SPENT THE
NIGHT WITH
I REMEMBERED NOW
WAS ONLY MY
BEST FRIEND
IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD
WE DID EVERYTHING
TOGETHER
SHE EVEN STOOD THERE WITH ME
AT THE ALTER
WHEN I SAID MY VOWS
I EVEN KISSED HER
ON THE LIPS
TO SEAL MY FATE
WITH
THIS OTHER WOMAN
I’D NEVER SEEN
IN ALL MY YEARS
THIS WAS THE ONE I HAD
MARRIED
SHE LOOKED SO——
i opened my eyes
and there
she was
lying next to me
my best friend
in the whole wide world
i nudged her awake
she rolled over and
faced me
i told her i had
the strangest dream
she helped me navigate
what it meant
i was so glad to be here
waking up
beside her
